New Brain-Computer Interface Captures 3,000% More Data, Controls Wheelchair with 95% Accuracy
Georgia Tech researchers developed a soft, wearable brain-computer interface that collects 3,000% more brain signals than conventional systems. In testing, the device enabled users to control a wheelchair and a robotic arm with 95% accuracy using only their thoughts. Its wireless design and comfort make it a breakthrough for real-world assistive technology. Read more here

Poverty in Latin America Has Been Cut Nearly in Half Since 2000
New UNDP data shows multidimensional poverty in Latin America dropped from 40.6% in 2000 to just 20.7% in 2022. Over that time, internet access jumped from 11% to 74%, pension coverage nearly doubled, and more people moved into formal jobs. It’s a clear sign that living conditions and social support across the region have made big strides. Read more here

$30 Billion in Medical Debt Erased for 20 Million Americans
A historic initiative has wiped out $30 billion in medical debt, helping 20 million people across the U.S., an average of $1,100 forgiven per person. New Laws in Utah and New Mexico Support Over 70,000 Children, Cut Costs for Families
Utah’s new law will provide free school lunch to 40,000 more students, saving families an estimated $850 per child each year. In New Mexico, expanded childcare subsidies now help over 30,000 children, with some families saving up to $10,000 annually on care costs. Together, these policies are expected to reduce child poverty, ease household budgets, and improve access to education and employment for parents. Read more here and here

AI Analyzes 100,000 Dolphin Sounds and Uses Phones to Chat Back
Google DeepMind’s new AI model analyzed over 100,000 dolphin vocalizations, identifying thousands of unique call types and about 50 commonly repeated sound patterns that may resemble words. Researchers used underwater speakers connected to smartphones to play synthesized dolphin-like sounds in real time and monitor dolphin responses. The project marks a major step toward understanding and possibly communicating with dolphins using advanced technology. Read more here.

Extreme Poverty Drops by 88% in China and 86% in Indonesia Since 1990

Though China’s progress is often highlighted, Indonesia achieved a nearly identical relative reduction over the same period. These sharp declines show how sustained economic growth and policy efforts can transform millions of lives in just a few decades. Read more here.

Quantum Messages Securely Transmitted Over 248 km Using Standard Fiber
Researchers achieved quantum-encrypted communication across 248 km of existing fiber-optic cable, nearly double the previous real-world record. The system maintained low error rates and high signal integrity without the need for repeaters or special infrastructure. This milestone proves quantum communication can scale using current telecom networks. It opens the door to ultra-secure internet and global quantum communication systems in the near future.
